| Description |
Green the Tenderloin is an urban farming program that teaches people how to plant seeds, harvest produce, cook healthy meals, compost, and extract honey from rooftop beehives. In a rooftop garden that sits above GLIDE's main building, afterschool classes teach youth and families gardening and cooking skills. The garden features hydroponic vegetable growers, earthboxes, lightweight garden beds made from shipping pallets and milk crates, a worm composting system, beehives, and an educational mural. The garden hosts weekly beekeeping classes, community volunteer work days, and special events pertaining to urban gardening. The program also includes a community garden that is run by residents of GLIDE's housing program. This garden features a miniature greenhouse and a rainwater harvesting system, and was supported by the San Francisco Community Challenge Grant and a partnership with the San Francisco Zen Center. |
