What is this Indicator?
This indicator tracks the number of 501(c)3 Public Charities in Palm Beach County, as a component (45%) of all 501(c)3 corporate designations (3,658) in PBC which also includes Private Foundations, Non-501(c)3's, Hospitals or Research Organizations, and IRS "Suspense" status organizations. Schools are not included in the total number. |
| Why this is important: It is important to track charitable and community service activities in a community to encourage philanthropic activity, measure economic impact of community led interventions, and to identify service gaps. |
| Technical Note: This indicator is updated locally, because it does not meet the traditional criteria to be a "standard" data indicator (regularly updated, available for other geographic regions, etc.) Todd L'Herrou and Ron Nyhan, Ph.D. of Florida Atlantic University divided the IRS - Business Master File (BMF) between graduate students in the Non-Profit Management program at FAU's School of Public Administration. 3658 business records found were checked against the Florida Division of Corporations records by Name and/or EIN and against the Guidestar database to identify the number of active 501(c) Public Charities. "Not founds" were cross-checked by another student. |
